Power Calculator for Generators: Convert kVA to kW, kW to kVA, kW to HP

How to choose the Electric Generator that you need?

When you need to buy an electric generator or a generating set for a caravan, a farm, a company or anywhere you need electricity and where you can turn on a gasoline motor, you first have to know some very important data:

1. List of Devices

Do a list of the tools, lights, machines and devices that you want to turn on at the same time with your electric generator, and note down the power consumption (watt continuous) of everyone of them.

You can use the following table:

Device Power consumption (watt continuous)
Fluorescent Lamp 35
Light bulb of 100W 100
Vídeo Device 100
Refrigerator / Icebox (*) 800
Freezer (*) 700
Microwave Oven 1500
Coffee Maker 1200
Hairdryer (*) 1500
Radio 200
Color Television 250
Computer 400
Printer 350
Fax 600
Photocopier 1600
Bench Grinder(*) 400
Hedge Trimmer(*) 500
Circular Saw, from 25 to 40cm wheel diameter (*) 1500
Flash Light 500
Grinder of 30cm diameter 2500
Angle Grinder, of 10cm diameter (*) 550
Angle Grinder, of 12.5cm diameter (*) 750
Drill (*) 700
Thicknesser (*) 700
Circular Saw of 12.7cm diameter (*) 1000
Hand Sander (*) 1020
Circular Sander(*) 450
Floor Sander of 20cm diameter (*) 2000
Concrete Mixer(*) 1320
Hidrojet of 1Hp 3500
Compressor of 20 Hp (*) 2200

If you want to connect other devices to your electric generator, take a look at their fact sheet or manual and note down the continuous power consumption (in Watts) indicated by the manufacturer.

2. Consumption for a Continuous Use

Do the sum of all the consumption powers of the devices and tools that you wrote down on your list to obtain the final continuous consumption power in Watts you will need.

3. Starting Consumption

Now calculate the additional watts you need to start the devices and tools of your list. Only consider the devices or tools with an induction motor. See the items marked with an asterisk (*) in the previous table.

This is a very important factor to consider when you calculate the minimum electrical power you need for your electric generator as induction motors need three-times more power to start (three-times more watts) than what they need to run in continuous.

To calculate the additional watts you need to start the motors, you can use the following table:

Motor Power (Hp) Starting Electrical Consumption, for induction motors (watts) Electrical Consumption for Continuous Use (watts)
1/8 850 275
1/6 85 275
1/4 1050 400
1/3 1350 450
1/2 1800 600
3/4 2600 850
1 3300 1100
2 6600 2200

To use this table, take a look at the fact sheets or labels of the motors or devices of your list that have an induction motor and note down the power (HP) of everyone of them.

When you have your HP, go see this table and note down the watts you need to start the motors and the watts you need for a continuous use, and sum them.

4. Now sum the results of the points 2 and 3:

Total necessary watts = continuous use watts+ starting watts

5. If you want to calculate easily the consumptions you have to know exactly which electric generator or generating set you need you can use the power translation tables for electric generators that we show you above.
